There isn’t much Gainesville doesn’t have to offer, whether you’re visiting or a local resident. The city hosts the ninth largest university campus at the University of Florida and also plays home to Santa Fe College. As such, college sports is a big past-time in the area. Additionally, Gainesville Fl hosts a number of cultural events for those who prefer the arts over spectator sports. Each year, the city hosts the Spring Arts Festival at Santa Fe College. The event, usually held in April, is one of the largest events the city offers with genuine and original artwork that always makes a lasting impression.

Another popular exhibit, The Downtown Festival and Art Show is nationally recognized, drawing over 100,000 art fans each year. More notable events hosted in this central Florida city include the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire, the Gainesville Improv Festival, and The Fest. The Fest is a multiple day music festival hosted at a number of venues throughout the city.

Gainesville Plays a Strong Influence in Music

It may not be surprising that the city of Gainesville has a prominent cultural scene, considering its history. In the music scene alone, the city has given birth to some of music’s most popular artists, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Stephen Stills, and The Eagles’ Bernie Leadon and Don Felder, just to name a few.

In addition to a long list of artists, Gainesville also serves as a homebase to a number of independent record labels. No Idea Records and Elestial Sounds are among the more widely known labels, but, by no means, are they the only music producers to call Gainesville home. Harvest for Hope, an area non-profit charity, hosted the Harvest for Hope Festival for two years, as well.
Visitors to this rich and active city are bound to find something to do, no matter what their specific areas of interest. The city has a host of attractions from the Gainesville Raceway and the Florida Museum of Natural History to the Hippodrome State Theater and the Devil’s Millhopper (a geological state park named for its 120 foot sinkhole). Whether you’re a local looking for something new or visitors in the area eager for a taste of area culture, there’s always something exciting and entertaining going on in Gainesville.
